“What is needed today is a church which knows how to respond to the expectations of young people. Jesus wants to enter into dialogue with them and, through his body, which is the church, to propose the possibility of a choice, which will require a commitment of their lives. As Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus, so the church must become the traveling companion of young people...”
- Pope John Paul II, World Youth Day 1995, Philippines
At IHM we enjoy working with young people. Youth ministry is more than programs and events. This ministry it’s about discipleship, connection and comprehensiveness. We want to enable our young people to live as disciples through their involvement in service, ministry and leadership opportunities. We want to integrate them into the liturgical, pastoral and ministerial life of the parish community. At the heart of our youth ministry is the presence of caring, supportive relationships where youth experience the love of God.
Our Youth Ministry has the following components:
Service Projects - We present our youth with opportunities to help others, nurturing a social consciousness and commitment to a life of justice by concrete ministry efforts. We are currently offering a service project every month and they are usually on Saturday mornings. We are always in need of service coordinators and chaperones.
Retreats - We create opportunities for young people to enter into healthy relationships of trust and respect with their peers and with adults. We organize retreats throughout the year in order to combine fun, communal prayer and liturgical experiences.
Middle School Team - We work with 6th-8th graders. We offer them a variety of social events (bonfires, corn mazes, bunco, pizza nights, etc.) as well as some spiritual activities (retreats, Masses, prayer services.) These events typically occur on a Friday or Saturday night. We have between 4-5 big events a year.
Confirmation Team - We help teenagers to find the truth of what is to be a Catholic, as we coordinate and facilitate their Confirmation Preparation. We work with 10th grade students. We start the process in November and end with Confirmations in May.
Youth Leaders - Our youth are called forth to leadership. We organize Saturday afternoon or Sunday night youth sessions and work with grades 7-12th. We play games and build community as we develop our faith.
