IHM participates in this outreach to help the poor and homeless throughout St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Friday is IHM's day to provide lunch. Our commitment involves three to four hours of volunteer work at the Soup Kitchen in downtown Atlanta. They prepare and serve lunch to about 300 people.
"Feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty" sums up what the soup kitchen ministry is all about. IHM volunteers have helped prepare and serve a substantial meal for approximately 300 homeless people every Friday for the last 20 or so years. This is our contribution to a Saint Luke's program that has served over 2 million meals to the needy who live on the streets of Atlanta.
The members of our IHM group have grown into a close community where healthy concern and compassion melt into a joyful and happy work atmosphere. Our ministry never turns down a volunteer. When we fear there will not be enough help on any particular day, a volunteer always appears, like an angel, to help out.
We all witness to the fact that it is better to give than to receive. Our "circle of prayer" before each meal, led by the kitchen supervisor Clyde Corbin, moves us in a spiritual way that has to be experienced to be fully understood. We will understand though what the Good Lord is talking about on that great last day when we hear Him say "When you gave unto the least of my brethren you gave unto Me."
